Mike Fuller resigns from Decatur

Post by TroRAntelope »

Mike Fuller resigns yesterday from Decatur High after 7 years. The situation is tenuous, to say the least. Interesting that no reason has come out, with regard to misconduct or performance. His contract was unanimously renewed back in March. Board deliberated for 7 hours after listening to 10-15 pro Fuller talkers talk and a statement signed by every coach in the district and still wanted him gone.

Interesting timing and circumstances, for sure.

I know there are quite a few Windthorst fans on here. Mike's dad, David Fuller, coached at WHS in the late 70s before moving on to WF Rider.

Sounds like small town politics.

Sometimes the admin hates it when the Athletic Director is more popular than themselves. I'm not sure this is what happened in Decatur though.

Was it a "New" board? He had previously been renewed 7-0 in March.

From the Liberally Lean From the Land of Dairy Queen blog (a look at the news from the humble confines of Wise County):

The meeting started off with a bombshell with Trustee Jennifer Wren, who could not be in attendance, had a letter read objecting to the meeting taking place. But the Big Reveal was in the first paragraph where it was disclosed that that Board President Thomas Houchin had already approached Dr. Joseph Coburn and "ordered" him to reassign Fuller without Board approval or discussion.

Then a letter in support of Fuller was presented signed by "all coaches" in the Decatur system. (How are they feeling this morning? The ultimate vote to remove Fuller was a clear message that their opinions and concerns did not matter.)

When the Board tried to go in executive session, Fuller's attorney requested that any discussion occur in public. Despite Fuller having this legal right, the Board seemingly ignored the Government Code and went into secret discussions anyway.

And despite all of the support for a coach with an outstanding record, the school board voted to wastefully write an enormous taxpayer check to get rid of him.(The spending of government funds like a drunken sailor isn't getting enough play in all of this mess.)

That sounds like the crap that happened to me in Rotan. Bad school board and a puppet Superintendent...

Less than a month later the superintendent was released after being renewed previously.
