All-Time 2A State Champions

Post by ManInBlack »

Was bored tonight, so I put together the list of all time State Champions in Class 2A because I thought it would be kind of cool to see. Co-Campions are denoted, and when 2 Champions are separated by a “/“, the first team was the Division I Winner & the team after the “/“ was the Division II Winner. After looking at it, man how things have changed since the 1940s!! Some of those early 2A Champions are very big today. Looking back through the information, 1948 was the first year there was a Class 2A State Championship. In 1959, Stamford beat Brady 19-14 to win Class 2A. However, Stamford was stripped of the title a few weeks later for violating the “Recruiting Rule”:

The Interscholastic League’s executive committee, meeting in Austin, ruled that Stamford had violated the recruiting rule in the case of Wendell Ray Robinson, 210-pound All-State center. In addition to losing the state title, Stamford was placed on probation for the next two years and will be disqualified from any district honors in 1960... Reports of a ‘Stamford investigation’ have been heard in Brady for the last several weeks. Although the league did not say so, reports here said the first tip to the league came in an unsigned letter, postmarked from Seymour, a district rival of Stamford. Robinson remained in Stamford when his family moved to Floydada in the spring of 1959. H lived in the Stamford fire station and reportedly performed duties in return for his lodging. The committee decided that he had done nothing in return for the lodging and found that his meals had been paid for by a group of boosters, not connected with the school system. Robinson was found guilty of violating the amateur rule which prohibits the payment of any money or ‘valuable consideration’ for participating in athletics.”

This is only correct from 2014 to current!!! Previous to that 2A schools were actually division 1A....

Actually, 2A is 2A. The teams changed but the numbers didn’t. For example, Refugio has never been the 1A State Champions.

Most definitely the numbers have changed....history of 2A/1A numbers. You can't just erase the history of the former division lines....former 2A champions would be considered 3A champions to the current alignments.

2A 2018-20 105-224
2A 2016-18 105-220
2A 2014-16 105-219
2012-14 1A 199 & Below 2A 200-449
2012-10 1A 199 & Below 2A 200-429
2010-08 1A 199 & Below 2A 200-429
2008-06 1A 194 & Below 2A 195-414
2006-04 1A 189 & Below 2A 190-389
2004-02 1A 179 & Below 2A 180-344

Further proof of my argument can be found in UIL State Championship Record book as they consider 2A the former 1A division.

So what you’re telling me is that it DOESN’T SAY “2A State Champions” on the trophies all those teams earned? Yeah, ok.

My point was not that enrollment numbers didn’t change, but that 2A is 2A is 2A. I was going through and listing all of the teams that won the Class 2A State Championship in the past. Daingerfield’s trophies, Sonora’s 2000 trophy, etc. all say 2A State Champions on them.

I understand that the landscape of Texas High School Football has changed. For all intensive purposes though, 1A Football no longer exists in terms of 11-Man Football. I would classify all of the teams who won the 1A Championship, like Windthorst, as 1A Champions.

I just find it very interesting that in the UIL State Championship Record Book any records set in the 2013 State Championship game between Refugio and Cisco are considered 3A State Championship Records and not 2A State Championship records.

I think that’s because the only team setting records that night was Cisco, & the UIL decided they needed to move up for a few years.

Yeah but what’s considered 2A by the numbers now. Was Mostly 1A before 2014. For example, This doesn’t list Shiners 2004 state title. Shiners enrollment was about 175 back then. Not to mention. This was originally a 1A message board lol. There were no Ganado fans in here before they dropped. No Refugio fans either lol.
