Windthorst - Wellington

Post by Windthorstfan »

What a game!!! We were very fortunate to come out with the win. Possessions were at a premium. Wellington made some untimely mistakes early and we came up with some stops as well on defense.

Wellington took the opening possession from their 27 yard line to our 5 yard line in 17 plays, but on the 18th play on 4th and 1 they had a false start penalty pushing them back to our ten. They were only able to pick up to 5 yards thus turning the ball over at our 5 yard line. They had previously converted on 4th and 2 and 4th and 1 on the possesion. There was only a minute left in the 1st quarter.

We go three and out and our 23 yard punt gives them possession at our 36 yard line. They convert a 3rd and 4 to pick up an initial first down to our 25. They again face a 4th and 2 but another false start pushes them back to 4th and 7. They overcome the penalty and pick up the 1st down on an 8 yard run to our 14 yard line. Defense bows up and on 4th and 2 and stuffs the run for a yard loss. Possession took another 6 minutes off the clock to gain 30 yards. We punt from our 13 and have ball lands about the 37 yard line and take a fortuitous bounce to their 49 yard line.

They take over with 3 minutes left in the half, but go 3 and out. In the punt formation, they commit another false start penalty. Following the punt we take at our 15 with 1:50 left in the half. Quick kick punt to end the half rolls dead at their 20.

First decent starting field position as we start at our 32 but can't convert 3rd and 4. 34 yard punt goes out of bounds at their 33. After an initial first down they punt from their 48. We corral the punt at the 17 yard line and return 25 yards to our 42. But after picking up a first down have to punt it back to them from their 40, ball lands about the 28 and takes a Trojan roll to the 12 yard line.

They go three and out and punt from their 17 yard line. We kind of muff the line drive punt at their 49 yard, but are able to fall on the ball at their 47 yard line. Their gunner is about at 44 yard line when we fall on the ball but he dives onto our play and is flagged 15 yards giving us the ball at their 32 yard line. We gave 6 yards on first down on a run to the right. On the next play they don't cover our WR lined up on our sideline and he scores uncontested and the extra point is good with 1:14 left in the 3rd.

They start their next possession at their 36 yard line. They move the ball to our 34 yard line with 8:54 left in the game, but facing 3rd and 1 they have another false start penalty. We stop them for no gain and on 4th and 6 and they elect punt. The ensuing punt lands at the 10 and then bounces into the end zone for a touchback. 39 yard punt but only a gain of 19 yards in field position. 7:52 remains in the game

We pick up a first down but can't convert 3rd and 8 from our 32 as our run is stuffed with ~4:40 left in the game. Clock is ticking so we are in no hurry to punt it back, surprised a time out wasn't taken to conserve some time since Wellington hadn't shown a propensity to move the ball quickly. their return was lined up 30-35 yards from the LOS. Our punter gets off a beautiful high kick that forces their return man to retreat to make a play on the ball, but is unable to track it down but the ball lands at their 32 and rolls to a stop at their 10 yard line with 4:02 left in the game.

90 yards to have the potential to win the game. My understanding is Wellington doesn't kick extra points. First down run for a loss of one 1 3:50 remains, run for 4 brings up 3rd and 7 3:11 remains, run for 0 with 2:38 left. Wellington calls a timeout facing 4th and 7, then calls a 2nd timeout. Complete a pass for 8 yards to pick up the first down at 13 yard line. Run for 13 yards 2 minutes left. Run for 1 yard 1:45 left. Sack loss of -11 with 1:23 left (also called for holding which was declined) Facing 3rd and 20 we intercept the pass attempt at their 37 yard line ending the game.

Wellington held Windthorst to 8 possessions, 5 first downs, and 92 total yards and lost 7-0. What a physical game. False Starts definitely effected us the last couple of games it sounds like. Hats off to Windthorst for ending the losing streak against Wellington and playing a very physical, smart game. Well done Trojans!

I think we're losing 7 seniors and bringing back our QB, RB, and WR so some key skill players coming back so excited for that! Using my own math from text messages from friends/articles I think our RB Marc Ramirez finishes this season with 315 carries for 2,550 yards (8.09 yards per carry) so I'm excited to have him back and see how he does next year. Hopefully he and everyone stays healthy and we make it back next year.

But for now it's all about Windthorst and Mart! Good luck to both teams...Mart going for the 4 peat and Windthorst looking to get another title!
