He is maybe the best RB that I’ve had play the position

Postby Windthorstfan » Tue Aug 20, 2013 1:21 pm

SMU coach June Jones on Traylon Shead: He is maybe the best running back that I’ve had play the position

Zach Line was one of the most productive running backs in SMU history and finished second behind only Eric Dickerson in most major rushing categories in school history.

But now marks the beginning of the Traylon Shead era.

“I think the transfer running back Traylon Shead from Texas is maybe the best running back that I’ve had play the position,” SMU head coach June Jones told WNML-FM last week.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder is a complete back that appears to be a more dynamic back than Line. Shead really impressed in the spring and will without a doubt be the Mustangs’ feature back in the fall.

Shead began his college career at Texas before transferring to Navarro JC, where he rushed for 1,194 yards and 17 touchdowns and was named an honorable mention All-American.

@max_olson: Per his agent, former #SMU and #Texas RB Traylon Shead is entering next month's NFL Supplemental Draft

Injuries derailed his season last year at SMU. Maybe he didn't play at t.u. since he couldn't hang onto the ball in his 51 carries last year his fumbled 5 times. You're not going to tote the rock in the NFL if you cannot secure the ball. He only played 4 games last year, with his last being at the end of October when he hurt his knee. He didn't participate in spring practice. Will be very interesting to see if any teams take a flyer on him in the supplemental draft. Just my opinion, but he probably doesn't get drafted and has to attempt to catch on with a team via free agency.

I only got to see him play once and that was against Stratford in the Championship game, Stratford throttled him along with the rest of the team from Cayuga. He certainty had all the tools, speed, strength and size.

Supplemental draft comes and goes with no selections, so he is now an unrestricted free agent.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/20 ... elections/

Four players were eligible to be selected: New Mexico wide receiver Chase Clayton, North Carolina linebacker Darius Lipford, Virginia-Lynchburg defensive tackle Lakendrick Ross and Southern Methodist running back Traylon Shead. None of those players is considered a particularly good prospect, so it’s not surprising that no team was even willing to give up a 2015 seventh-round pick to acquire one of them.

Now Clayton, Lipford, Ross and Shead are all unrestricted free agents and can sign with any team. All four of them have a good shot of at least getting a training camp invitation, but they’ll all be viewed as long shots to make a 53-man roster.
