Abilene TLCA Eagles are now down to 12 players, with three games left to play in district. They still have to play, Stamford, Hawley, and Anson.

Windy, since you are from the area, do you know anything about the Olney ISD situation. We spoke to a lady from Olney, and she told us that they are on their second Superintendent and their second Head Football Coach since the first of the school year. Have you heard anything????

She also told us that her grandson is a junior and since Junior high, he has had five different football coaches.

Yes Sir, you are very right... This is like the old Hawley system; we used to change Head Football Coaches like paper towels.... It was a very sad program, that had only flashes here and there... Coach Mitch Ables and his Coaching Staff, have built a program from the ground up, starting in the lower grades and even in Pop Warner. He is the longest tenured Head Football Coach in Hawley history with 12 years and a 123 and 29 winning record. Before Mitch Ables, Hawley had won only one playoff game in school history in 2013. Since then, with Mitch Ables, we are 25 and 10 in the playoffs.

These low numbers are all over though, Shiner has had to pick up all sorts of random games this year. The JV had to play Industrial for the 2nd time last week since Falls City had no JV. And they are picking up a game against Victoria St. Joes this next week since Pettus has no JV. Also Shiner 7th grade is picking up a game against Yoakum, apparently Pettus doesn’t have a 7th grade team either. I think either Shiner 7th or 8th played Schulenburg last week too. Wild times.

1. Best as I can research, previous superintendent announced in February, he would retire in June. He had been at Olney since 2014. Current Superintendent was hired in April. He was promoted from within as he was previously the HS principal. Best as I can tell he is still the Superintendent. All based on stories in the Olney Enterprise.

2. Jody Guy resigned from Olney in February of 2023 as his son was senior and in my opinion saw the writing on the wall they were going to be down he resigned as AD/HFC. Quote from TRN story, “XXXXX is going to be a senior, and I don’t know what this is going to look like for him,” Jody Guy said. “We’re not closing any doors. We’re going to see what our options are and find the best place for him to succeed.” They wound up at Wellington. When he resigned Olney split the AD and HFC jobs. In April of 2023 Olney named their DC Jason Powers as HFC. Following the 2023 season, Olney decided to recombine the positions and posted the job to internal and external candidates. In May of 2024, they hired Chris Tobola out of Tomball. Quote from Olney Enterprise "He and his family will be “in and out of town” for the next month or so as he sells their home in Tomball and buys one in Olney, he said. He plans to be fully immersed in the athletic program by July." 2024 they go 2-8. In July of 2025 following weeks of complaints from parents and coaching staff about his alleged verbal abuse of student-athletes and fellow coaches , Tobola resigned. In August Olney Alum (1998) Dustin Altmiller was named the HC. As far as I know he still is HFC.

So on social media I found posts degrading Stephenville ISD's decision to build a stadium and honor Art Briles in the process. Any thoughts? Afterall Stephenville technically wasn't even a .500 program when he took over in 1988, 0.497 wins 0.467 loss 0.036 ties 328-308-24. Last playoff appearance was in 1952. In his 12 years at Stephenville they went 136-29-2 .814 and won 4 State Championships.

Yes, for sure these are wild times... I think it is becoming pretty standard for schools not to have enough kids at the 2A level to field 7th, 8th, and JV teams. You see many combined 7th & 8th grade teams as well as different teams playing different schools on the same night. We had that at Hawley this Thursday night. And there was no JV game, so the JV travelled with the Varsity to Olney and played in the second half. It was good to see as these kids worked in practice all week and deserved to have a game.

I remember a few years ago, our junior high played Hamlin's junior high like three different times as neither school had games, and the kids deserve to get to play in games... I thought it was great work by Mitch Ables to make this happen for the lower grades. Besides, it helps build your program when all the kids get to play in a competitive setting.

Albany JV have not had a game for 2 weeks,7th and 8th have been playing mixed schools and will this week as well

Windthorst has a mixed JH team due to a lack of kids. Talking with Seymour's superintendent they are able to have a 7th and 8th grade team, but he lamented that no one else in our district has a 7th grade team.
