Baseball 2022

Post by Comanchealumni06 »

Baseball looks to be kicking off this week. At least in Shiner. They had a scrimmage against Yoakum yesterday and have the annual alumni scrimmage this Saturday. From what I’m hearing Shiner will be pretty solid again this season. What are y’all’s teams looking like?

Alright, Shiner boys are 3-0 with wins over Brazos 9-3, Lexington 8-0 and Hallettsville 6-4. That win over Lexington was the most recent in which our junior pitcher Drew Wenske tossed a perfect game with 10 strikeouts! Shiner Ace Ryan Peterson has returned as well. He is also a junior. Might be a special year for Shiner baseball!

We improved to 7-8 last night with a 13-2 win over our cross-county rivals Archer City. Played a fairly tough schedule, couple of a our losses were head scratchers but then again tournament play is about getting the kids ready for the playoffs. Playing 5-6 games over a weekend is tough on a pitching staff that is fairly inexperienced. Better to test them now when the games don't matter.

Shiner had a nail biter with Schulenburg, 2-1 win earlier this week. They beat Ganado tonight 14-0 in 5 innings. They are now 17-0 on the season.

#1 Shiner Comanches defeated the #9 ranked 3A Yoakum Bulldogs squad 2-1 in a playoff warmup game. Staying undefeated and picking up Coach Daniel Boedekers 400th win as a head baseball coach!

Region 4 Regional Quarter Final Games & Predictions

W28 Shiner ( ) VS W27 Thorndale
Game 1: Thursday May 19 at 7PM at La Grange
Game 2: Friday May 20 at 7PM at La Grange
Game 3: If needed, Saturday May 20 at 2PM at La Grange

Prediction: Shiner

In my opinion, Shiner has been the most dominant team in 2A so far this season and I think they are definitely the team to beat. I believe this series should be Shiner's first true test so far in the playoffs.Thorndale is a tough team that should push the Commanches more than the previous two teams they have faced in the playoffs. That being said, I still think Shiner is the best overall team that should take this series and move on.

R29 Mason VS ( ) W31 Kenedy ( )
Game 1: Thursday May 19 at 7PM at San Antonio Davenport
Game 2: Friday May 20 at 7PM at San Antonio Davenport
Game 3: Saturday May 21 at 12PM at San Antonio Davenport

Prediction: Mason/Kenedy

This should be the closest series in Region 4-2A this week in my opinion. Kenedy has been dominant all season and it has carried into the playoffs where they have outscored their two opponents a combined 46 to 1. Mason on the other hand has been on a 12 game winning streak and is starting to get hot at the right time, especially with their bats. The key to this game will be how Mason's bats handle Kenedys outstanding pitching. Mason has a clutch scrappy bunch that you can never count out and I believe they will give Kenedy all they want and more. This should be a close contested series that will likely go 3 games. Too close to choose a winner for this one.

W26 Mumford ( ) VS R28 Flatonia ( )
Game 1: Thursday May 19 at 7PM at Mumford
Game 2: Friday May 20 at 7PM at Flatonia
Game 3: Saturday May 21 at 2PM at Fayetteville

Prediction: Flatonia

Flatonia in my opinion is the hottest team in the region right now. They have been dominant so far in the playoffs and soundly beat a really good Evadale team in two games last week. Mumford on the other hand beat a good Holland team in a close game last week. I'm not sure if Mumford has the pitching to slow down this Flatonia team. If Bulldogs continue to play the way they have been, I believe they win this series in 2 games.

R31 Refugio ( ) VS W29 Johnson City ( )
1 Game: Friday May 20 at 7:30 at Sequin, Smokey Joe Williams Field

Prediction: Johnson City

This should be another really good matchup. It appears that Refugio won the toss to make this a one gamer which plays into their hands. They have an absolute stud at pitcher in Jordan Kelley and tons of athletes all over the field. The Bobcats beat a very good Falls City team in 3 games last week and looked impressive doing it. Johnson City on the other hand plays great defense and has a lot of pitching depth. They beat a very tough and scrappy Port A team in two games last week. I feel like the Eagles seem to be more suited for a 3 game series due to all the pitching they have, which is why I assume Refugio elected to flip for a single game. If J.C. wants to win this game they are going to have to jump on Kelley early and keep all of Refugio's athletes in check on the base paths. The Eagles also will need to stop leaving runners stranded on bases which was an issue for them last series. J.C. will likely be throwing their Sophomore lefty who has been impressive so far this season, but being an underclassmen it will be seen if inexperience will play a factor. Jordan Kelley will be one of, if not the best pitcher J.C. has seen this season, so will be interesting to see how they handle it. This will be a very close contested game that can go either way, but being a J.C. homer I have to go with my Eagles.
