The Storm

Postby Cottontop » Fri Dec 06, 2013 6:55 pm

I just got off the phone with a friend living in North Dakota near the Canadian Border. He said that since early this morning the snow has been coming down, it is nearly waist high and is still falling. The temperature is dropping way below zero and the north wind is increasing to near gale force. His wife has done nothing but look through the kitchen window and just stare. He says that if it gets much worse, he may have to let her in.

To my lady friends, I could have changed the guy-girl description,

but I didn't.

I had relatives that went to Mexico over the weekend where it was 93, but when they got home it was -34 with the windchill in South Dakota. My cousin did mention she can't wait to ice fish Friday with a sunburn under her coveralls. Crazy people!!! We went home to South Dakota for Christmas in '89 and the temperatures were -100 with the wind chill, my parents decided then they weren't moving back.

A northern woman would probally reply someone has to do the work and keep the farm running.

My uncle my have been exaggerating a bit but in '89 there were a lot of cold records broken across the plains - it was even -4 in Wichita Falls on Dec 22nd. In South Dakota it was in -29 - you'd have to have wind gusts at 70 MPH to hit -100. Don't recall it blowing that hard!!! It was was probably in the 20-35 mph range which would still translate to -60 to -70 wind chill. Bitter cold non the less - stupid me wanted to experience it so I helped with the chores instead of staying indoors. Remember my uncle saying you could freeze to death if you stayed out in longer than 10 minutes. Need less to say all their milk cows are barned in the winter so they don't have to go out and herd them up.
