D 1 District 14

Postby PurplePunch » Mon Aug 27, 2018 12:20 am

Center Point came back into the district from D2 to make it a six team district; otherwise it remains intact. I'll provide a brief season prediction here over the next few days, in hopes others will jump in with their own and provide more information.
I see three tiers to the district in 2018: Tier 1 is Mason; Tier 2 is Harper and Junction; Tier 3 is Brackettville, Sabinal, and Center Point.

DC TFB Magazine says Mason has 6 returning starters on each side of the ball, but I'm not sure how that is calculated. There are fewer (4) on offense if you look at who started most of the games, but more if you look at everyone that started at some point. In any case, with the scores being run up early last year against a disappointing schedule, the returning lettermen played as much or more than the departed starters so this teams isn't lacking for experience at most positions. It has a fairly big offensive line that needs to gel and get used to the speed and ferocity of varsity football; the receivers are talented but inexperienced; and the backfield returns intact, including two excellent running backs and a three-year starter/district MVP at QB. I hear that the offense has been tweaked to better use the talents of this group, and I guess we will find out against Wall week 1.
Defensively, it looks SOLID to exceptional, with a lot of kids that played and played well last year. Quick, fierce, and unafraid, with linebackers that can run like deer and hit like buffalo, but look small. The depth is provided by kids off a 9-1 JV team, and many of them show great promise. It will be interesting to watch them grow this year against a tough schedule: Wall, Johnson City, Sonora, Jim Ned, and Comanche. Four of the five went multiple rounds into the 3A playoffs last year, so the Punchers will have to grow up fast. But, very successful Mason teams used to play schools like Brady, Llano, Dripping Springs, Liberty Hill, Comanche, Wall, Sonora, and other larger schools, so as long as you grow as a team and stay healthy that is the best way to prepare for district and the playoffs.

More to come.

Boom!! Its finally game week! Returners on offense, Wofford, Klaerner, Cockerham, Martin, and Stultz (5); defensive returns Stultz, Bunton, Klaerner, Cockerham, Wofford, and Coe (6). I'd base that off of district games and playoffs last year. Not sure about the 6th on offense. Friday can't get here soon enough.

I count Stultz as an offensive and defensive handyman; he played all over the place on both lines, as needed, and was a really good sophomore by the time the playoffs started. I expect great things from him this year. He and Ortiz bring a lot of quickness to the weakside of the line, and Martin did a good job with the small, quick nose Blanco put over him.
I'm with you on Thursday and Friday - got the JV games against Wall, the barbeque, and Meet the Punchers (7th though Varsity) on Thursday and Punchers V Hawks Friday night at Wall. Great start to the season!

Harper returns 12 and lost 12, per DC TFB. They played a lot of younger kids as the injuries mounted last year, and return 6 on offense and 7 on defense. Both Sivells are dynamic players who return at RB (leading rusher) and LB (leading tackler), the QB/DB and four WR/DBs return, LB Aguilar, but OL/DL Moore and Clark look like the only returning linemen. Coach Gibbs is back and has his program in place. Their non-district schedule is certainly manageable, so, barring the terrible injuries they suffered last year, they should arrive at district sporting a good record and ready to rumble.

Anyone from Harper want to add or correct? We'd like to hear from Longhorns fans this year.

Great win Punchers! Key plays at critical times by key players, and many of the unknowns became well known in Puncherland! Great first game!!!

Week 1 Results, Week 2 Schedule/My Take
Brackett: W1 - WOODSBORO 21-38
W2 - @ LA PRYOR / LaPryor won @ 3A Cotulla first week; too tough for the Tigers
Center Point: W1 - @ SA ST ANTHONY ( SAT 2PM ) 25-20
W2 - @ BROOKS ACADEMY / Don't know much about St. Anthony or Brooks, but even though Brooks has 1300+ students, I got the Pirates.
Harper: W1 - CHRISTOVAL 34-15
W2 - @ SAN SABA / Nice win last week, but SS was thrashing Johnson City 53-8, so I'm taking the 'Dillos
Junction: W1 - INGRAM MOORE 8-30
W2 - @ GOLDTHWAITE / I hope Ingram is better; that's a bad loss. But Winters is terrible, and they beat Goldy, so I'll take Junction
Mason: W1 - @ WALL 27-21
W2 - JOHNSON CITY / Great week 1 win over a great 3A D1 program, while JC was getting thumped by SS; Punchers by a bunch.
Sabinal: W1 - D'HANIS 16-20
W2 - ROCKSPRINGS / Tough loss to D'Hanis, but Sabinal should rebound this week against Rocksprings.

What's your take?

Center Point 35-20 over St. Anthony. We were very proud of our Pirates, playing conditions were horrible 106 degree heat index at 2:00 pm Kick off, heat was brutal.
Score should of be worse we have to fix a few things I think 3 fumbles really hurt our team.
I like our boys this week by 14
Mason big
San Saba by 10
Rocksprings by 7
Goldy by 3
La Pryor by 12

Yeah, Saturday afternoon on September 1 is never going to not be horrible heat. Friday night, however, was surprisingly mild; nice breeze.
If Goldy beats Junction they are in for a VERY long season; same with Sabinal and Rocksprings. We beat Goldthwaite at every level last year by as much as we wanted; historically great program is way down. But Junction is too, so...
Good luck to the Pirates this week and throughout non-district. And thanks for participating! Your thoughts are appreciated. I was going to do a CP Pirates preview based on Dave Campbell, but if you're willing I think you could do a much better job.

Well I know one good thing is we have 12 seniors most in a while. Looks like we will carry 25 on Varsity and 17 on JV. GOOD numbers for us. JV beat St. Anthony 35-0 really good group of 9th graders. Looks like the new offense from last year is clicking pretty good 2nd year in a new system is always better and seems to fit the type of players we have. Looking forward to a solid year from the Pirates.

San Saba is going to pound Harper, the Dillos have some real talent that they have been waiting on for 6 years. They have some very good athletes and really big kids. The QB is very, very athletic, he's a poor to very poor passer, but very athletic. They will be too physical for Harper. I think San Saba could make some noise in D7. Goldy is in a bad place right now, I feel for their fans.

With a few exceptions MASON, SHINER, REFUGIO, MART, etc most small towns go thru cycles I am sure they will bounce back.

Week 2 Results and Game 3 - Center Point and Mason are 2-0, Harper 1-1, and Brackett, Junction, and Sabinal are 0-2. Jump right in with your previews and predictions.
BRACKETTVILLE ( 0-2 / 0-0 )
W1 - WOODSBORO 21-38
W2 - @ LA PRYOR 12-26
W3 - ELDORADO - Eldo throttled TLC Academy, then lost to Winters. Not sure what either of those mean, but the Tigers have been looking good for a half, then fading. Got to go with the Eagles over the Tigers in this one.
CENTER POINT ( 2-0 / 0-0 )
W1 - @ SA ST ANTHONY ( SAT 2PM ) 35-20
W2 - @ BROOKS ACADEMY 55-6
W3 - @ SA TMI TMI beat St. Gerald in their only game, while CP as done well against Brooks and St. Anthony. I think the Pirates will make it 3-0.
HARPER ( 1-1 / 0-0 )
W1 - CHRISTOVAL 34-15
W2 - @ SAN SABA 0-53
W3 - @ INGRAM MOORE Ingram with wins over Junction and D'Hanis - I have no idea what that means. But this game and the next (Junction-San Saba) will give us an idea of the relative strength of both district teams. I'll go with the 2-0 Warriors, but it's a weak pick.
JUNCTION ( 0-2 / 0-0 )
W1 - INGRAM MOORE 8-30
W2 - @ GOLDTHWAITE 10-13
W3 - SAN SABA Yeah, Junction, you guys need to come alive. 'Dillos by dozens.
MASON ( 2-0 / 0-0 )
W1 - @ WALL 27-21
W2 - JOHNSON CITY 49-6
W3 - SONORA GoTW in this district: Sonora with a win over Ozona and a thrashing of Lamesa looks better than expected, and Mason with the hard-fought win over Wall and the big win over Johnson City. I'll stick with the Punchers at home, but expect a typical Broncos-Punchers battle.
SABINAL ( 0-2 / 0-0 )
W1 - D'HANIS 16-20
W2 - ROCKSPRINGS 6-34
W3 - @ SCHERTZ JOHN PAUL Took some research to learn this is John Paul II in Schertz/New Braunfels; they lost first week to Woodlands Christian, and I have no idea what that means, so I'll go with the Yellowjackets to win one.

Mason by 21 over Sonora
Bracket over Eldorado by 7
San Saba over Junction by 40+++
Ingram over Harper by 10
Sabinal over John Paul by 14
Center Point over TMI 21
Had to deal with 45 min lighting delay but I thought our boys dealt with it well 1st play after delay was 40 + yard TD run. Specials teams looked really good, gave us 4 or 5 very short fields and a punt return. We will see where we stand with Ingram and La Pryor coming up after a better TMI team

Tuff loss for the Pirates last night 35-21. Got to fix the fumbles, had 2 of them bounce just right and returned for TD's. Kids played hard just some silly mistakes that will hurt you against better teams. It will be a very tuff test next Friday vs. 3a Ingram who is undefeated and spanked Harper last night.

Well, here we are at the last non-district game, and everyone has a BYE next week. This past week Mason remained undefeated with a win over 3A Division 1 Jim Ned; Brackettville got their first win over D'Hanis; Center Point lost to 3A Tom Moore of Ingram to fall to 2-2; Harper remained at 1-2 after their game with Ozona was cancelled; Junction fell to Menard 20-26 and Sabinal lost 6-46 to LaPryor, so both remain winless.

Big Games this week with 3A Comanche coming to Mason, Brackett is at Rocksprings, Center Point is hosting LaPryor, Harper is at Menard, Junction travels to Ozona, and Sabinal is hosting the undefeated Charlotte Trojans. None of those are slam-dunk wins or losses for D14 teams, so fans support will matter. How do you think your team will do? Your projection on the other D14 games?

Also, how are your sub-varsity teams doing?

First week of district play! Four playoff spots available for six teams. In Preseason Mason went 5-0 (against 3A teams); Center Point and Bracketville went 2-3; Harper 1-3; Junction and Sabinal went 0-5.
First Game Matchups (my pick in CAPS)
Brackett at MASON
CENTER POINT at Harper
SABINAL at Junction

Sabinal at Junction both winless yet in this district they both win at the right time could it be possible D-14 could send a couple of 2-8 teams into the playoffs? Take Mason out of the picture and this could be one of the mostly evenly matched anyone can beat anyone districts in the state.

Second week of district play, as more gets sorted out.
Last week Center Point (1-0) squeaked by Harper. This week Center Point hosts Bracketville, which lost to Mason last week. Sabinal hosts Harper, both winless in district and with a single win between them, while Mason (1-0) travels to Junction (1-0) to contest for the district lead.
Bracketville was tougher than expected, and I suspect their game with CP will be a good one. Junction will be fired up with Mason in town but I don’t think it will be enough.

Saba Jv is pretty depleted right now! We start 5 soph on varsity-3 OL, 1 LB/Back Up Qb/ And Receiver,Free Safety. Also, the starting JV running back checked out of school this week who was a soph. and their best defensive player is out with bad ankle! So its pretty much a freshmen team.

San Saba is obviously trending in the right direction and I'm happy for them because they have been awful for awhile, but they have not played a team with a pulse. They aren't quit ready for Mason yet.

We pretty much know who wins this district as well as 15 and 16 districts. Im starting to feel shiner might win this region. Reason being revenge is a beast. Dont b fooled by shiners loss. They jumped on Lexington early but lost by Lex able to outlast by more numbers of players. On level class im starting to think Mason falls in region final again. Shiner gets revenge on refugio then mason. Heck it would b in masons best interest for refugio to beat shiner then revenge factor would be on masons side against the bobcats.

No one is looking down on a loss to Lexington. We shall see, revenge hasn't done anything for Mason the last three years against Refugio and it hasn't done anything for Shiner against Refugio or Mason the past several years. Hunger can be just as powerful as revenge though, and Mason is hungry. Who knows if that is enough to get out of Region 4, but this team is focused and ready.

Week 3:
Mason 41 - 7 Junction
Harper 36 - 6 Sabinal
Brackett 41 - Center Point 25

Next up (My picks in CAPS)
Center Point (3-4, 1-1) at MASON (7-0, 2-0) (by 40, or whatever coach Burns decides)
Sabinal (0-7, 0-2) at BRACKETTVILLE (3-4, 1-1) (by 40, or whatever coach decides)
JUNCTION (1-6, 1-1) at Harper (2-4, 1-1) (most interesting game - I could see it go either way, but favor the Eagles by a TD)

Mason sub-varsity schedule this week (assuming roads not flooded and no lightening storms Thursday)
Mason JV Purple plays San Angelo Central Freshmen at the Puncherdome
JV White at Brownwood Freshmen
8th @ Center Point
7th @ Lake Travis

Varsity game was a thriller too! JV purple vs San Angelo Central a student body of 750 and only 2 freshmen teams I hope we can hang with them, but I will say since purple team decided to quit beating themselves they look pretty solid.

Comanche was the wake up call they needed, and they heard about that effort from more than their coaches. BTW, Center Point had a JV team (saw them play Johnson City) but suddenly doesn’t. So Mason JV Purple team plays 6A San Angelo Central Freshmen, JV White plays 4A Brownwood, 8th plays Center Point, and 7th plays 6A Lake Travis. Wonder which program will get more experience and will mprove more from top to bottom this week? Yes, we may lose to the bigger schools, but we will learn and improve.

I assure you, the lack of a JV at CP has nothing to do with MASON. At all.

from what i know they CP has not had a JV for last 2 weeks due to grades. So I know MASON had nothing to do with it.

We are "THE" tennis school, not "a" tennis school. But, we do a few other things fairly well also.

Coach Owen is the elementary PE teacher and varsity line coach.

You’re right. Just coincidence that ‘other things’ happen with district teams year after year. Looked like quite a few on the sideline at JC. Surprising so many became ineligible, but I guess it happens. Mason still has 2 JVs and 2 junior high teams; glad it didn’t happen to us. ;)

DISTRICT 14
1. MASON 3-0
2. BRACKETVILLE 2-1
3. JUNCTION 2-1
4. CENTER POINT 1-2
5. HARPER 1-2
6. SABINAL 0-3

Mason is at Harper, Sabinal at home.
Center Point at Sabinal, hosts Junction
Harper hosts Mason, at Brackettville
Junction hosts Brackettville, at Center Point.
Brackettville at Junction this week for second place. Center Point has a win over Harper if they end up tied for fourth. Lots of things could happen, but right now Mason, Brackettville/Junction, and Center Point look solid for playoff seeding.

7th, 8th, and JV Purple are playing Harper (guess they came up with a team), I don't believe our JV White has a game.

Mason (4-0) over Harper (1-3) 56-6
Brackettville (3-1) over Junction (2-2) 40-12
Center Point (2-2) over Sabinal (0-4) 42-19
Standings: 4-0 Mason, 3-1 Brackettville, 2-2 Center Point and Junction, 1-3 Harper, 0-4 Sabinal.
Final week: Sabinal at Mason; Junction at Center Point to determine 3/4 seed; Harper at Brackettville.

Mason 7th 25-0 Sabinal 7th
Mason 8th 19-8 over Sabinal in what was a good game. Sabinal has a lot of good athletes with good size on that team.
Mason JV White (Freshmen) 40-0 over Brownwood Freshmen

Good last games for the younger Punchers, and the culmination of good seasons for all 3 teams.
