That's what I've been hearing, as well. If he's out that will help DeLeon a little, although I can tell you his replacement looked pretty solid last Friday.

Big Country Game of the Week: De Leon faces Crawford on the road

Evan Ren, Abilene Reporter-News
Sept. 27, 2017

http://www.reporternews.com/story/sport ... 707184001/

De Leon's David Yeager speaks about the Big Country Game of the Week Evan Ren

LAST WEEK: 33-11, .750
SEASON TOTAL: 136-39, .777

The De Leon Bearcats (4-0) have been so good since last season, that it has been difficult finding a spot to squeeze them into our Big Country Game of the Week.

The simple fact is, they enter most weeks as a multi-score favorite and we want our spotlight games to be competitive.

This Friday, however, the Bearcats and highly regarded quarterback Kevin Yeager will face an opponent in Crawford that is more than capable of presenting them with a problem.

In fact, the Pirates (3-1) handed De Leon a pair of blowout losses a year ago, ending their season in the second meeting, 45-7 in the Region II title game. And with lopsided wins over Tolar, Meridian and Bosqueville on their résumé this year, CHS appears to be the right team at the right time to push De Leon on to the marquee.

This has the makings of a great matchup, with De Leon roughing up the opposition by a 46-6 average with two shutouts, including a 37-0 win at Santo last week.

Crawford, which has faced the tougher slate thus far, has a loss to Class 3A Clifton (21-20) on its ledger on Sept. 8. But the Pirates have averaged 37 points per contest and are at home.

Add the fact that this is the District 7-2A Division I opener for both clubs and there is ample drama to shine the spotlight here.

A tough pick, but I’ll take Crawford, which has faced the tougher schedule and has the home field edge.

PICK: Crawford by 3

I guess Deleon needs a tougher pre district schedule to get ready for teams like Crawford. Btw those officials cater to kelm like I've never seen. That guy live on the field. I mean all the way down to the 5 yard line and not even a warning.

I bet Coach Yeager hears this ( CLICK )when he calls the same Div 2 schools trying to peace together a 2018-19 football schedule. When Hico played for the regional title two years in a row, nobody would agree to play us the next two years. We wound up traveling to Archer City, Breckenridge, and Jarrell. Goldthwaite has had similar problems in the past, like playing Callisburg.

Big Country Player of the Week: Albany QB Hamilton takes accolade

Evan Ren, By Evan Ren
Oct. 2, 2017

7. Drew Hermesmeyer, QB, Jr., Goldthwaite — Hit eight of 10 throws for 190 yards and five touchdowns in a 49-21 win over Hamilton, to give the Bulldogs (3-1) its first loss on the year.
Did you ever think you would see the day when a Goldthwaite quarterback had five TD passes in a game?
The Eagles improved to 2-3 with the win.

8. Anthony Rangel, RB, Sr., De Leon — Was treating would-be tacklers like bowling pins in Friday’s 38-18 win at Crawford in the Big Country Game of the Week. I know this because I witnessed it firsthand.
Rangel finished with nine carries for 209 yards and TD runs of 70 and 72 yards.
After seeing his Tasmanian Devil-like effort, I tweeted a suggested nickname for him of “Taz.” But I was quickly notified that he is known at De Leon as “The A-Train.” That works too.

Big Country Notebook: De Leon Bearcats are legit

Evan Ren, By Evan Ren
Sept. 30, 2017

http://www.reporternews.com/story/sport ... 719512001/

Every successful football program has a collection of benchmark wins.
You know, those victories that stick in your memory as moments when you realized your team had moved up a rung or two on the competitive ladder?
The De Leon Bearcats just experienced one of them in a 38-18 win over Crawford in Friday's Big Country Game of the Week.
Granted, critics will point out that Crawford was hit hard by graduation and isn't the same team that finished 14-2 last year. They'll also point out that the Pirates were missing one of their top running backs last week.
To those people, I'd say, you're missing the point.
The fact is that De Leon erased two separate deficits on Friday to win on the road against a team it had never beaten — ever.
Trailing 18-17 late in the third quarter, De Leon closed with 21 unanswered points to hand Crawford its first home loss since 2009. If that isn't a benchmark win, I don't know what is.
"They're a good football team and a great outfit," said De Leon coach David Yeager about Crawford. "They were a great measuring stick for us.
"We were very proud to come over here to a great place and come away with a win."
Does this mean we should go ahead and punch De Leon's ticket to Arlington? No — not with Mart lurking in Region II. But I am saying that this program has arrived as one of the "big boys" on the block, and Friday made it official.

Goldthwaite grad Seward reflects on Tarleton football career

Marc David, Special to the Abilene Reporter-News
Oct. 4, 2017
http://www.reporternews.com/story/sport ... 730317001/

The scholarship offers didn’t roll in for Ryan Seward.
He was a high school lineman at Goldthwaite, a Class 1A (now 2A) at the time, and small school players are generally not in high demand, especially when their experience is mainly run blocking. Seward went to Tarleton State as a preferred walk-on. He left as an All-American and inducted into the Tarleton Athletics Hall of Fame in May.
His football story took several detours before ending in the 2001 Cactus Bowl. In the first place, he came to the Texans as an offensive lineman with experience at guard and tackle. He attained All-American status as a center, a position he never played until his junior year.
Secondly, the Bobcats ran a wishbone, so his experience was almost exclusively run blocking. Tarleton “passed, I would guess, 70 percent of the time,” he said. “I had to learn new techniques.”
Third, he was determined to be a teacher/offensive line coach on the high school level. That desire ended after his fourth year, compliments of a mean-spirited coach.
Additionally, his college football career almost ended before it truly began.
“To be honest with you, I hated it,” Seward, 38, said of his redshirt freshman season. “I am glad I stuck it out. I was able to start six games alongside our tight end (James Dearth), who was also a deep snapper and played many years in the NFL.”
Seward, an implementation program manager for Fidelity Investments in Westlake, has fond memories of his last two years in Stephenville. Current coach Todd Whitten returned to Tarleton in 2000. The coaching staff moved Seward to center. He developed into a two-time all-conference center. The Texans won their first-ever Lone Star Conference title in 2001 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. Seward earned All-American as well as LSC Offensive Lineman of the Year honors.
“Everything fell into place (the last two years),” Seward said. “My accolades were due in part to the success of the team more than anything else.”
That’s not the way Whitten saw it.
“Ryan was a phenomenal football player for us, but I think the thing I’m even more proud of is the kind of man he is,” Whitten said. “He’s one of the hardest working, most dependable people I’ve ever had the honor to coach. It’s a shame I only had him for two years. I’m extremely proud of everything he accomplished and is still doing today.”
Seward thought he would be teaching and coaching an offensive line today. That changed after four seasons at Azle High. Ranchview High opened in Carrollton, and Seward was hired as offensive line coach … or so he thought.
When he reported for a spring meeting, Seward was introduced as tight ends coach. He was baffled until he found out that an older, more experienced, individual was given the position. Seward was contacted and offered a position at Fidelity Investments. He told the head coach that he was seriously considering the position.
“The coach laced into me with a string of profanities,” Seward said. “I told him, ‘I want to thank you.’ He looked at me puzzled. I said, ‘Thank you for making my decision for me.’ It was the best move I ever made from a career perspective. I was raised that when you commit to something, you follow through with it. He definitely helped ease my mind.”
Seward said he never looked back. The former center is now front and center in the investment field, earning accolades for his work with high-end businesses.

Last year we got Coach Dixon who is not only the DC but also the strength and conditioning coach. Was doing that at Texas Tech as an assistant, from what I heard. Anyways he mixed it up a bit ( plus some effort and devotion ) and the results are starting to show.

Hopefully they can finish strong and make the playoffs again this year.

Pretty sure the only way they miss the playoffs is if San Saba wins out and Goldthwaite loses out!!! Just saying!!!

Big Country Player of the Week: Hawley QB Stokes snags weekly accolade

Evan Ren, By Evan Ren

BIG COUNTRY TOP 10

9. Calvin Martin and Anthony Rangel, WR/RB, seniors, De Leon — Both were at the forefront of last week’s 56-14 win over Hamilton, beginning with Martin, who combined five catches for 106 yards and three touchdownss on offense to go with four tackles, an interception and a pass breakup on defense.

Rangel, or “Taz” as I call him, charted 190 rushing yards and three scores on just 11 carries as the Bearcats improved to 7-0.
Continued Prayers of Recovery For Casey @ Refugio & Scott Akins @ James Bowie Go Bearcats !!! **== **== **== **== **==
