2017 Top Matchups: DeLeon & Munday Featured
By: David Robinett
Jul 21, 2017

http://www.bigcountryhomepage.com/sport ... /771496618

July 21, 2017 - District 7-2A Division I is expected to come down to this game. The sixth-ranked DeLeon Bearcats travel to Crawford to take on the third-ranked Pirates. DeLeon went to state quarterfinals last year and posted an 11-3 season after winning just three games the year before. Head coach David Yeager and his team return fifteen starters from that team, including preseason district MVP Kevin Yeager. Crawford made an appearance in the Class 2A Division state championship game in 2016 and nine positions are filled with starters from that team. Crawford won both meetings between these two last year. DeLeon hopes flip that this year.

My preseason prediction

1. Crawford - Lost some good talent to graduation, but still should challenge for a regional title.
2. Deleon - Returns a ton of talent. Should challenge Crawford for district title. Give edge to Crawford due to game @ Crawford
3. Goldthwaite - Don't look for them to challenge the top two teams in district, but should be the best of the rest. Favorable schedule as Hico and Hamilton have to travel to Goldthwaite this year.
4. Hico - Returns enough to make the playoffs. Question if they adapt to the new offense ? Time will tell.
5. Hamilton - Gave Goldthwaite fits before the Eagles pulled away. Unfavorable schedule could keep them out of the playoffs. They have to travel to Goldthwaite and Hico
6. San Saba - Young team last year, and still young this year. Will be better this year. Hoping to get put in a better district next year in the UIL Realignment.
7. Valley Mills - Lost a ton due to graduation. Had a good JH teams last year, but will take a few years to get them adjusted to varsity level of play.

SAN SABA VS WINTERS - SAN SABA BY 5 - San Saba doesn't go winless this year.

I would not be shocked if the Hamilton/Tomball Chr. Homeschool game will be cancelled. Tomball ISD has pushed their season back a week to Sept. 5th.

Pigskin Prep rated them 112.46 while Hamilton's rating was 113.99 at the end of last year.

As a "private school" they might not follow Tomball ISD - granted it's about an almost 4 hour drive from Tomball to Hamilton.

They won the T-CAL State Championship last year after a player was ruled ineligible on the other team. They lost the game 23-26. The ineligible player scored 20 of the 26 points.

High expectations for 6th-ranked DeLeon

By: David Robinett
Posted: Aug 22, 2017

http://www.bigcountryhomepage.com/sport ... /796065113

August 22, 2017 - DELEON, Texas -- The DeLeon Bearcats are one of the teams in Class 2A Division I expected to make some noise in 2017.

They start the year ranked sixth in the state, but they are picked second in district behind Crawford.

Fifteen positions are filled with returning starters.

The number of returners and the number of players on the team are a real strength for this year's Bearcats.

Kevin Yeager said, "I mean since last year's team we probably lost 4 maybe or 5, we have a bunch of experience coming back, and just the numbers we have is the biggest this year. I think we have like 50 or so coming out, and so that's an advantage for us, and experience and skill wise, I think we're above average as any other team in our district, so that's good."

Jake Sanders said, "We have a lot more leadership this year. We have Kevin and then Orson are coming back, and that's a big part of it. Two big helps on offense and defense, and then we have some kids that are stepping up and playing ball like they need to."

Quarterback Kevin Yeager in back after throwing for over 3-thousand yards and 41 touchdowns in 2016.

The season starts on September 1 at home against Baird.

Evan Ren's Class 2A predictions

Evan Ren, Abilene Reporter-News

http://www.reporternews.com/story/sport ... 523496001/

DISTRICT 7-2A DIV. I

1. Crawford
The Pirates will again be a force to reckon with, despite returning just five offensive and four defensive starters. Crawford has 16 lettermen coming back, including QB Gage Pearson, who threw for more than 2,000 yards and 26 scores a year ago. RB Garrett Dutschmann (1,321 yards rushing) is back as well.

2. De Leon
This could very well be the best De Leon team we’ve seen in more than a decade. The Bearcats have seven offensive and eight defensive starters back among 16 lettermen from an 11-3 team. This includes standout QB Kevin Yeager, who accounted for more than 3,000 yards passing and 40 scores a year ago. A Sept. 29 date at Crawford will be one of the Big Country’s biggest games of the year.

3. Goldthwaite
The Eagles have 12 of 22 spots occupied with returning starters from last year’s 7-4 team. But with just 11 returning lettermen, experience and depth will be in short supply. Goldthwaite has a quality quarterback in Christian Valencia and one of the district’s best running backs in Quaid Seward. So if the Eagles can get a push up front and stay healthy, they’ll pose a threat to everyone in the league.

4. Hico
With seven starters back on both sides of the ball and 15 lettermen coming back from a 6-5 team, the Tigers figure to be among the four teams from this district that will see postseason play. They have experience at quarterback in Briley Johnson, a solid running back in Jacob Smith and should be better, if health allows it. The schedule isn’t in Hico’s favor, with crucial district games against De Leon and Goldthwaite both on the road.

5. Hamilton
Hamilton has quietly been improving under coach Mike Reed, a former six-man wizard who posted a 5-5 record in his third season as an 11-man coach. This year, Reed has 15 lettermen to work with and a good running back in Martin Najera. On the downside, the games that are most critical to Hamilton’s playoff chances are both on the road — Oct. 13 at Hico and Nov. 3 at Valley Mills.

6. Valley Mills
The Eagles have been absolutely clobbered by graduation, with nine starters on both sides of the ball having received their diplomas in the spring. They do return their quarterback in Chase Keeton. But with most of the teams in this league returning their quarterbacks and supporting cast, 2017 shapes up as a real challenge for Valley Mills.

7. San Saba
Coming off an 0-10 year, the Armadillos have only one direction they can go, and that’s up. San Saba will have more than half of its offensive starters back among 14 lettermen, including QB Sean O’Keefe. But the defense took a hit from graduation and will return only three regulars. Look for the Dillos to break into the win column at some point, but the playoffs are at least a year away.

Evan's 11 games worth traveling for in 2017

Evan Ren, Abilene Reporter-News

http://www.reporternews.com/story/sport ... 539131001/

Every year, while helping to put together our football preview, I get to scan the football horizon and speculate.

Where will I be going through 11 Friday nights of high school football? At this point, it’s pure guesswork, and it almost always changes once it's determined who the surprises and disappoints are.

Nonetheless, this column still serves a purpose, and has evolved over the years into a preliminary roadmap of sorts, helping others to get a rough idea of what games may be worth driving to.

Yes, those people are out there, and in surprising numbers.

I’m talking about people who are willing to drive 100 miles to see one of the best football games of the week. They want to see several different teams each year and several different styles. But first and foremost, they want good football.

If I didn’t do this for a living, I would be among them anyway, searching the area for the best game I could find.

So this annual letter to them — Evan’s 11 — continues to my kindred spirits.

That said, let’s take a look at what appear to be the top games worth traveling to in 2017. Keep in mind, of course, that nothing is set in concrete.

All is subject to change as the surprises emerge.

I’ll see you on the road.

DE LEON AT CRAWFORD

Not only is this a candidate for Big Country Game of the Week, but it could be the game of the year, if everything holds together in the health department.

De Leon, with highly touted quarterback Kevin Yeager, is expected to have one of its best teams in the last 20 years. And in all likelihood, this matchup with an excellent Crawford team will decide the district title.

The Bearcats fell to Crawford twice last year by lopsided margins (once with Yeager hurt). But with 15 of 22 starters back for De Leon and Crawford only returning eight, one can expect things to tighten up considerably this time around.

ALSO WORTH A DRIVE

Albany at Cisco; Iraan at Colorado City; Sweetwater at Pecos; Eastland at Comanche; Coleman at Clyde; Anson at Roscoe; Hawley at Mason; Munday at Seymour; Stamford at Hamlin; Blackwell at Moran; Guthrie at Knox City
WEEK 6: OCT. 5-7

GOLDTHWAITE AT DE LEON

For three straight years Cisco and Eastland have provided us with the season’s final Big Country Game of the Week, and that could be the case again, depending on how things pan out.

But the early nod goes to Goldthwaite-De Leon in a matchup that produced a 38-35 thriller a year ago.

Both of these clubs expect improvement over last year and both are expected to snag one of the top three seeds in this district.

Toss in the fact that De Leon has never hosted the Big Country Game of the Week and a slight edge goes to this matchup. But there are several other games that could snag the top spot by year’s end.

ALSO WORTH A DRIVE

Snyder at Brownwood; Brock at Breckenridge; Eastland at Cisco; Merkel at Jim Ned; Tolar at Coleman; Anson at Post; Forsan at Stamford; Munday at Quanah; Roscoe at Hamlin; Gordon at May; Guthrie at Jayton; Strawn at Moran

Goldthwaite is big and strong on both lines, has a good running back, and the QB was way more accurate than the stats indicate (6/16). He had 4 dropped and three really exceptional passes defended where our DBs deflected it off the receiver's hands or just slapped it away just before the ball got there. They are better than you think reading the stats, and they played hard to the end. Only 19 suited out and 10 are seniors. One good lineman got ejected early for who knows what, and that hurt them as depth is a real issue.

We all know even now. Crawford and mart in 3rd week of playoffs and PROBABLY mart vs. Deleon in region final with mart advancing BUT THIS IS WHY WE PLAY THE GAMES.

DeLeon. In my opinion, for the central TX area, this is the 2A game of the week.

If Bosqueville can play as well as we did against Crawford, imagine the possibilities available to DeLeon with a more developed passing game and more experience in the skill positions. The question mark for me is the DeLeon defense. Will they be able to hold Crawford in check? DeLeon played very solid D against us in the scrimmage, but we're not Crawford. Hence the ? for me about DL's D.

We scored 6 TD's on Crawford with two offensive starters out and a freshman QB. With 3-something left in the 4th both teams had 6 scores apiece, but unfortunately we blew 4 PAT's, hence the 38-42 deficit at that time. BV made a couple mistakes in the closing minutes and Crawford was able to do what good teams do and capitalize to score 2 quick ones as the clock wound down.

My point here is not to dis Crawford. They're a disciplined team who executes well and the better team won our game Friday night. No doubt they will be up for this game and DeLeon is in for a serious fight, but I think it's one they can win based on what I saw last game.

Thanks for an unbiased, very astute prediction. I hope you are right. I think if Deleon can get over the mental aspect of the opponent being Crawford, they can win.

If we weren't playing Friday, I'd be heading out to this one. It's only a 25 min drive for me to Crawford. Hope I don't catch any grief from the Crawford folk on here, they're solid year in & out, but gotta call it how I see it.
Funny, I'll be heading your way Friday; we got Dublin this week.

Sounds pretty similar to what folks were saying about Crawford/Refugio last year. Wasn't such a lock in the 4th quarter at Jerryworld.

But yes... getting Mart a round earlier isn't a great reward for winning district.

That's the nature of the beast, that is the playoffs. Also why teams can be over ranked at the start of the next season. Ultimately though you are going to have to beat them at some point to get to the dance, doesn't matter whether it's the 3rd round or the 4th.

What does playoff timing have to do with pre-season rankings?

I don't think anyone on De Leon's roster is worried about Mart.

A team that goes deep in the playoffs the previous season generally is ranked high the next season regardless of who they played in the playoffs. Seymour in 2016, us in 2017. Who knows maybe by the end of the season we will live up to our pre-season ranking.

No one gets within 3 TDs of Mart until title game. Last year Mart still probably would have beaten Crawford 70 percent of time. Refugio was best last year. This year Mason is best in state. Mason by 2 over Mart. Count on it or dont but we shall see.

You must see a lot of football all over the state. I reckon DeLeon and/or Crawford will give it a go anyhow, should they get the opportunity. More important things happening this week.

Is Crawford's RB a go for this weeks game against DeLeon. I heard he was injured.
It's a pretty good day when you're on your way and you like where you're going. And you've got what you want and you want what you've got and you're wise enough to know it.
