Question for kids who are going to do online learning in 2020 eligiblilty ?

Post by H.TIGFAN »

Will kids who choose the off campus online learning option this year be eligible for athletic teams this year ? Some schools have said no, but others have said yes. UIL will likely have a say so, and will put something out soon.

That is a good question. I think they should be eligible. To me, it offers them learning and sports with less chance to contract the virus.

If receiving virtual instruction in and from the same district In which they are enrolled, I’m okay with it. But let’s make dang sure we don’t open the ‘homeschool’ door, where you are engaged in another curriculum but want to participate in extracurricular activities at the local school.

I fall on the other side of the issue I guess. If you’re too afraid of the virus to send your kid to school (completely understandable), then how can you justify letting them play sports at the school — sweating all over each other, breathing on one another, and being in direct contact with dozens of other kids...kids who have been at school all day for instance.

Lol that’s exactly what I was thinking. How can you do one without the other?

However, I know a few parents that are refusing to send their kids to school due to the mask order. They find it ridiculous. So on that basis, they actually don’t care about the risk. It’s a rule thing they’re fighting. These are people with younger children though. Not high school age kids. One friend of mine feels it’s insane to expect her little children to wear a mask for 8 hours a day. She would rather them just stay at home. Where they breathe clean air all day and not be agitated. Also, how likely will teachers be able to force little ones to keep their masks on all day? So I kinda see her point.

If schools start cancelling their sports, can you imagine the "wild, wild, west" of kids wanting to participate transferring to other schools. How would their previous school fill our their PAPF? Are they transferring for athletic purposes? That would be a BIG YES and thus ineligible under current rules.
