Mt Enterprise baseball team makes USA Today for gesture

En route to a game against Texas rival Shelbyville, the Mount Enterprise baseball team bus found itself stuck in traffic as cars filed out of the John D. Windham Civic Center.

Rather than hoot, holler and honk their way through the traffic jam in Center, Texas, the Wildcats discovered the steady stream of cars stemmed from so many people paying homage to Stanley Burgay, 62, who garnered so much respect serving Shelby County as a Center Police Officer for 30 years and a Timpson Constable for another 12.

So, the Mount Enterprise players and coaches asked the driver to pull their bus to the side of the road, where they exited the vehicle and lined the side of the road, removing their hats and bowing their heads as the police escorted funeral processional passed.

The Mount Enterprise Independent School District posted a photo of the team’s respectful gesture to its Facebook page. The post has received more than 12,000 likes and 2,000 shares, in addition to several thank you notes from local law enforcement.

“I’m very humbled at the amount of support showed for my fallen brother Constable Stanley,” San Augustine (Texas) Sheriff’s Officer Jonathan Sowell told the MEISD. “The amount of respect and consideration was awesome but one act stuck out to me more than the others. As we were heading to the cemetery with our brother a bus stopped on the side of the road. The bus contained the Mount Enterprise Baseball Team. What really made me proud was the team not only stopped they each exited the bus and paid their respect to our brother. Hats off to the Mount Enterprise ISD.”

Additionally, officers from the Center Police Department and Texas Department of Public Safety took the Mount Enterprise team out for ice cream after their game.
