Volleyball 2015

Postby WindthorstDad » Sat Aug 01, 2015 7:41 pm

With all the "hubbub" about football starting backup; we shouldn't forget our ladies begin their runs at the volleyball title once again. Should be a lot of talent from many teams returning.

Schulenberg looked great at state and should return strong. Lindsay graduated their 6'2" stud but will still return a good team. Iola had a strong team but cannot remember if the Gooch girl returns or graduated. Archer City returns all but one I believe and Windthorst returns the entire varsity team.

Windthorst hired native Allison Schreiber Bussey as it's next volleyball coach. Windthorst Coach Stacy Wolf retired from coaching to become a full-time teacher. Bussey was a member of Windthorst state championship teams and she led Archer City to a region championship this season over Windthorst last year. She now returns to her alma-mater to continue the Trojanettes successful run at state championships.

Let us know how your volleyball teams are looking for the up-coming season.

Iola's only loss was 5'8 Brittany McKnown, Gooch will be a junior. Iola returns 4 seniors and 4 juniors including Gooch from last year's team.

Remember, volleyball went to a 1A and 2A this year....that will put teams like RTC into 1A and not sure about schools like Water Valley, etc. on enrollment

Just re-read WindthorstFan's outline of how it works and it sure could become a mess.

WindthorstFan - so in your listing above using our district 5, all four 2A team and all 3 1A teams make the playoffs. Basically everyone from District 5 is in, correct?

Well that's what I get for trusting the UIL website - Gooch was a senior last year and signed with Sam Houston State to play volleyball.

Region I
2A
1a. Archer City
1b. Windthorst
Any given day – Archer City has height galore, Windthorst coach knows AC’s players strengths and weaknesses. Every game between these two will be a war. Who has the mental toughness to persevere? Both teams return 3 TGCA All-State players
3. Miles
4. Van Horn
5. Plains

1A
1a. Fort Davis
1b. Wink
Year in and year out traditionally strong teams in Region I
3. Sterling City
4. Bronte
5. Fort Elliot

Region II
2A
1. Thrall
2. Milano
3. Lindsay
4. Frost
5. Collinsville
Thrall returns 2 All-State players, Milano 1, while Lindsay loses two. Lindsay has been somewhat of powerhouse in Region II in a program that is only 10 years old.

1A
1.Bryson
2. Dodd City
3. Abbott
4. Avalon
5. Tioga
No clue really as none of these teams have had much success. Took a flyer with Tioga at #5 due mainly to being coached by a graduate of Windthorst, has had success at other coaching stops along the way. Think they are only in their 3rd year as a program.

Region III
2A
1. Iola
2. Beckville
3. Centerville
4. Evadale
5. Cayuga

1A
Whelp - I know nothing about these teams except in 1990 Yantis made the state tournament, but that was 25 years ago.

Region IV
2A
1. Schulenberg
2. Harper
3. CC London
4. Anderson-Shiro
5. Weimar

1A
1. McMullen County
2. Round-Top Carmine
3. D’Hanis
4. Burton
5. Runge

AC doesn't lose any. Wuthrich Cldnt play last yr due to recovering from ACL . AC shld be loaded for Bear. Will be competitive 2 a days as conservatively I have 10-12 girls that are dang good. Intrasquad will be great matches.

I had thought she had graduated. Wouldn't be surprised to see Iola have another great year but unless there is a third Gooch sister coming up, I do not think they will be as dangerous as the past few years.

AC and Windy return everyone! When's the last time that happened? Can't wait for these two to play head to head as it will be a dog fight each time. Would put a small wager down that these two return to Snyder for Regionals again.

Huge battle of last year's REGION 1 Finalist Archer City at Windthorst takes place tonight. They both are also in District 5 so this will be for the early district lead. Archer City returns all but two from last year's team (I believe) while Windthorst returns their entire varsity including all six starters. At last year's region final Archer City finally got over the hump and beat Big Blue to earn a state berth. The wildcard this year is that Archer City's coach and Windthorst native, Allison Bussey, is now coaching Windthorst this season after Stacy Wolf's retirement. I'll give the edge to Windthorst but bring your popcorn as this will be a great match!

NOTE: Windthorst currently ranked #6 in the TGCA polls while Archer City has not cracked the top 25. I believe this is a huge oversight by the voting coaches. Looking at the teams in the poll, I feel Archer City should be ranked, no less, than the top 15.

There are no voting coaches - the poll, as all TGCA polls, is compiled by one guy. When I submitted our results I also submitted AC's so don't know why the disconnect. AC is a definitely a Top 10 team.

I know you shouldn't compare scores but there is a team ranked ahead of us that lost to one of the teams in tournament play in two sets, that we beat in two sets at the KSA Disney tournament.

Archer City won three tight sets to beat Windthorst 27-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-17 at Windthorst High School.

Over all I felt Archer City had better hitting, better blocking and more energy. Now tell me why they are not ranked in the top 10?

Because the poll is stupid!!! There is another team missing as well in Harper - should be another Top 10 team. According to Maxpreps they are 10-7 on the season, but their losses have been to 4A & 5A teams. In fact they have beat the 2A 10th ranked team twice which should stand for something!!!

Here is Maxpreps Top Ten:
1. Iola 9-1
2. Windthorst 20-6
3. Beckville 21-5 (they cruised to an easy Bronte tournament (2A Texas Showdown) which is probably why TGCA has them ranked #1)
4. CC London 10-4
5. Weimar 21-6
6. Centerville 8-5
7. Milano 17-4
8. Thrall 9-7
9. Miles 18-6
10. Hawley 6-4
11. Wortham 21-6 Ranked #3 in TGCA poll

Archer City does not have anyone reporting their results so they show 2-4 on Maxpreps, ranked #20
AC was shafted in the TGCA softball poll too last year.

Valley View girls are getting stronger.. We just dont know how to act when in the lead against a very good team like Lindsay... Give the Lady Knoghts credit.. Socring 5 aces out of the last 7 points in the first set when it was 18 to 15.

We played great last night I will admit I was concerned as we haven't been firing on all cylinders this year, but I should have more faith having been around this particular group of girls for many years. They know how to take it up a notch when it's really important, they know how to win and last night it really showed. Very proud of them with all the changes and I tip my hat to the way our new coach..Krissa Johnson approached the game.

Feel quite sure w/these 2 teams there won't be much breathing room

Agreed. Look at the scores alone: 2 pts, 4 pts, 3 pts, 8 pts...not large victories shows how competitive these two teams are and will be. Good bet we both end up facing each other again in Snyder, Tx.

Another nail-biter between Archer City and Windthorst Saturday.

Windthorst defeats Archer City 21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-12

Two matches played each team has won 4 sets - Windthorst has outscored AC 184-180

Both coaches were more concerned about their next opponents then how they will decide a District Champion should the district end in a tie between the two schools.

Yes, trying to jump ahead to a DC playoff game is just something the fans like to bring up since it happened last year. Coaches are correct to be worried first about playing their remaining schedule.

Either way, I still predict both Windy and AC see each other in Snyder at Regionals again.

There was no DC playoff last year - Windthorst won all three matches played between the teams until the most important one - the one to go to State.

Windthorst Trojanettes defeated Petrolia last night and have only Harold and Vernon Northside remaining on the district schedule. Short of a major upset in the last two matches; I see Windthorst and Archer City setting up a one match playoff for the district title with the #1 and #2 seeds up for grabs. Each team won at the other's gym. I am guessing the coaches will flip a coin to play in either Windthorst or Archer City versus playing at a neutral site (ex: in Holliday).
