Top 10 Most Unique Mascots, 2A Edition

Post by Comanchealumni06 »

Ok guys, I saw on Dave Campbells where Pickle did her top 10 favorite Texas High School Football Mascots. People were mad because she didn’t include their super unique Mascot... they totally overlooked where she stated these were “Her Favorites” lol! This is all opinion of mine here as well. And let me tell you, 2A doesn’t disappoint! We have a lot of unique mascots. I could probably do a top 20 easily for us! Tell me what y’all think, we need something to talk about lol.

1. Itasca Wampus Cats - I mean come on! This should be #1 for the entire state! If not #2, New Braunfels Unicorns is pretty legit too. But your Mascot is named after a Cherokee legend! A true mythical beast! The Wampus Cat is basically the Chupacabra to the Cherokee. This is my favorite as well as the most unique IMO. Slow clap Itasca!

2. Hamlin Pied Pipers - Here’s another Mythical Being Mascot. And it’s a dandy! A Pied Piper is a folklore legend that finds its origin in Hamelin, Germany. Great use of your towns name! Another slow clap here! Not only that, if you look more into it, it’s terrifying! The Pied Piper legend has it that he used the music from his pipe to put children into a trance to abduct them. So your sending your football team to face a bunch of Pied Pipers!

3. Mason Punchers - I love this one, always have! Even if it was actually the Cow Punchers instead of the shorter name we see now I would find this one just as awesome! Cow Puncher as we all know was used to describe Cowboys back in the day by folks outside of the Cowboy lifestyle. Plus the name just sounds awesome! Perfect name for a football team! Who wants to go up against the Punchers? Sounds intimidating!

4. Coleman Bluecats - At first glance, I thought this was in reference to one of my favorite fish species! I mean fishing is my absolute favorite pastime! So it caught my eye! It actually has to do with a player showing up in the olden days with an image of a cats head on his shirt, so the name stuck for the whole team. I prefer thinking of it as an actual Blue cat lol!

5. Roscoe Plowboys - Farming community uses the perfect name! A bunch of hardworking farm boys that play football. We all know there is no better thing then a hard working athlete! Nothing much more to say. I’ve always liked this name. Kudos to Roscoe!

6. Sundown Roughnecks - Again, just blowing out originality like an oil derrick under pressure! Nothing says your an oil patch town like using Roughnecks as your mascot! West Texas, oilfield, perfect match!

7. Booker Kiowas - This one is unique to Texas and rare! If what I’ve read is true, no other school in the nation has used this mascot. And to be honest it’s an Indian Tribe not heavily talked about. I love how they kept this history alive by using this name. Kudos to Booker

8. Winters Blizzards - Perfect use of a name! Cause we all know an actual Blizzard in Texas... Not likely! Funny to say this since we literally just lived through one! The folks in Winters are laughing now! It even made their name more intimidating then I would have previously given them credit for!

9. San Saba Armadillos - A mascot with our state animal in full use. Shockingly, it’s the only school in the state of Texas that uses it... That fact alone makes San Saba deserving of a spot on any list like this. I mean come on all you “Bulldogs” and “Eagles” out there. It’s embarrassing!

10. Grapeland Sandies - This one had me stumped for awhile! A school in East Texas using a name involving sand.... Like why!? Then after doing a little research I learned that it was once referred to as “The Queen City of the Sand Flats” due to the sandy soil found in the region... who would’ve thunk it?

Honorable Mentions - Boys Ranch Roughriders, Floydada Whirlwinds, Memphis Cyclones, Hale Center Owls, Tom Bean Tomcats, Celeste Blue Devils, Tolar Rattlers, Freer Buckaroos, Gruver Greyhounds, Wellington Skyrockets, Munday Moguls, Frost Polar Bears, Somerville Yeguas, Rocksprings Angoras, Falls City Beavers

Oddest Mascot: Farwell Steers - I had to add this one under this slogan... I find it strange to name a football team after a Nuetered Bull... I can’t be the only person out there either. I mean come on!

There’s others I haven’t mentioned that definitely give more originality. I didn’t even include Shiner if y’all didn’t notice. Considering that there is another 2A school that uses Comanches as their name. Shout out to Stinnet West Texas! But these are still better then the heavily overused names like Bulldogs, Eagles, Hornets amongst others! No offense to those that use them, I know y’all have heavy pride in your teams... But I love originality! Tell me what y’all think.

Back before Rotan dropped down to 6-man they were the only 2A team that could use it's pecker to drill a hole in a tree. The Yellowhammer is a type of woodpecker. :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:

Graham is also the Steers. Their girls' teams go by the Lady Blues.

Way back when, when Dogfan was actually an Alvord Bulldog fan in 2005, Tolar was in our district. The day we played Tolar we had to kill a rattlesnake in our driveway before I left to travel to Tolar. Felt that was a good omen!! Wound up winning 28-11.

I replaced it with a team I wanted to add. Kiowas I believe is much more rare.

A few other 2A
Cisco Loboes
Crosbyton Chieftains
Italy Gladiators
Santa Anna Mountaineers

1A
Trent Gorillas
Nazareth Swifts

Probably my favorite is the Hutto Hippos

Upon further research the Atlanta Rabbits are the only Rabbits in Texas - 4 different Jackrabbits (Bowie, Forney, Graford and Ralls)
